How to Make Adjustable Legs

How to Make Adjustable Legs

Woodworkers go to great pains to make a piece of furniture level, but if the floor where the furniture sits is uneven, the piece will still wobble. Adjustable legs are the answer. The easiest way of making a table or chair leg adjustable is to add a leveling foot. These handy upgrades are available for wood or metal legs in many different styles and configurations. Most have the added benefit of a durable nylon glide on the bottom that saves wear and tear on your flooring.

Instructions

    1

Place the furniture upside down on a solid, padded work surface. Clamp the piece securely. Make sure the surface is low enough for you to work easily on the bottom of the legs.

    2

Find the center of each leg with a square and mark it on the bottom with a pencil. Center punch the marks to create an indentation for easier drilling.

    3

Consult the leveling foot instructions for the proper size drill bit and required depth. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the bit to mark the depth. Center the drill on the punch mark and carefully drill a hole in each leg.

    4

Separate the screw-in adjustable stem portion of each leveling foot from the T-nut. Place a T-nut in each hole and press down until the barbs touch the wood. Hammer the T-nuts flush with the bottoms of the legs.

    5

Screw each leveling foot into a T-nut. Turn the piece of furniture over onto its legs and adjust the feet until the piece is level.
