How to Build a Massage Table

Giving other people massages can be a great way to earn money or to just do a good deed by keeping a loved ones muscles loose. Its possible to give back and body rubs on a sofa or floor, but using a massage table makes it easier for both the massager and the receiver to relax. There are a few things to keep in mind as you build your massage table: stability, durability and comfort. Your table should be able to support patients of all weights, last a long time and be a comfortable place on which to lie down.

Instructions

    1

Draw up blueprints so youll have some plans to dictate what your massage table will look like. Consider how high you want your massage table to be. This should be determined according to how tall you are. Decide upon a height somewhere between your waist and below your shoulders.

    2

Make the bare top of your massage table. Get two large pieces of plywood and bolt 2 by 4s between them. Ring the edges of the plywood and bolt an X in the center for better support. Dont worry about the exposed bolts; youll cover those later.

    3

Cut the legs of your massage table. Use brackets to attach them to the top of your massage table, one at each corner. Turn the table upright to make sure your table is sturdy enough to support a persons weight. The legs shouldnt wobble at all. If they do, add another bracket. The last thing you want is to have your table collapse mid-massage.

    4

Add a cushion to the top of your massage table. You should devote a lot of thought to how soft you want the table to be. If its too soft, you may not be able to apply the pressure necessary to work on your patients muscles. Put a couple layers of foam on top of your table and test it out for yourself.

    5

Select and purchase a couple yards of durable fabric. This should be a light color, since these are more soothing, but you should also consider the decor of the room in which youll be giving massages. Lay the fabric over the top of the massage table and use the staple gun to affix the fabric to one side of your massage table. Pull the fabric tight over the top and staple the other sides to the top of your table. Cut away the excess fabric.
