Ideas to Refinish a Wood Table With Paint

Ideas to Refinish a Wood Table With Paint

Painting a table is an economical way to change the look of a room, and you can find plenty of ideas to refinish a table with paint. The array of paint colors available means you can be as wild or as conservative as you like. There are also some painting techniques you can use to give your table a weathered or an aged look. Some ideas for painting your table involve a quick and easy process while others require some time to complete. Does this Spark an idea?

Just Paint It

Paint your table a solid color, and dont be afraid to try something different. Choose a distinctive color to make your table a focal point, a subtle color to make your table blend in with your dcor or a bold color to make a statement. You could also leave the top of the table a natural wood and paint the bottom of the table.

Faux Finish

Use faux glazes to create a striking and stylish finish on your table. These techniques are traditionally used for walls, but will work for furniture as well. Faux finishes include smooth leather, soft suede, traditional fabrics and stone and marble. You could even use a faux finish on the top of the table and paint the bottom a solid color.

Venetian Plaster

Another paint finish, called Venetian plaster, enhances the light and dark tones of a color for a classic European look. The effect of this technique is an aged marble look. Use Venetian plaster on the top of the table and a coordinating solid color for the bottom.

Crackle Technique

The crackle technique will give your table an antique, weathered look. This technique involves a base coat in one color, a coat of crackle medium and a top coat in a second color. When done correctly, the top coat will crackle to reveal the color of the base coat. Once again, you could crackle just the top of the table and paint the bottom a solid color. You could even sand the edges of the table to create a distressed look.

Pearlescent and Metallic Finishes

Pearlescent and metallic paints will give your table a distinctive pearl white finish or a metallic gold, silver or copper look.

Distressed Look

The distressed painting technique is a popular idea that gives your table an aged, antique finish. This technique involves painting your table with a base coat in one color and a top coat in a different color. You then use a fine grit sandpaper to sand the table on the edges to reveal the base coat and/or the wood. You can also sand the rest of the table to dull the top coat in some areas and reveal the base coat in other areas.

Stenciling

For a Scandinavian look, paint your table and then use a stencil to paint a design in a contrasting color on the top of the table. You can buy stencils at paint or decorating stores as well as some craft stores.

Graphics

If you want to get really wild or if you have a room with a 1970s theme, paint graphics on your table. Use a variety of complementary colors to paint lines in a checkerboard design on the top of your table. Then paint the bottom part of the table in a solid color.
