Cake Decorating Ideas for a Cosmetology Graduation

When designing a cake for a cosmetology graduation, use the tools of the trade for inspiration. For example, if the graduate specialized in hair, design a cake around brushes, hairdryers and curling irons. Hairstyling

Carve a cake out of hairstyling tools. Stack several cakes and carve them with a serrated knife into the shape of a hairdryer or curling iron. Cover the completed cake in rolled, colored fondant or frosting. Alternatively, make a sheet cake and frost it in your favorite color. Mold a brush, comb and pair of scissors out of modeling chocolate and place them on top of the cake.

Up-Do

Design a cake around formal hairstyles. Carve a cake to look like a box of hair rollers. Carve the cake into a square, box shape and then add the rollers. Make the rollers by carving small pieces of cake into a cylindrical shape or by molding them out of modeling chocolate. Make bobby pins and baby's breath flowers out of rolled fondant and place them around the base of the cake to make it look like a hairstyle in progress.

Mani-Pedi

Another specialty for cosmetology is nails. An easy way to make a cake centered on this is to make a three-tiered round cake. After the cake is stacked, cover it in either rolled fondant or colored frosting. Then cut out 2-D shapes of nail polish bottles, nail files and nail clippers out of gum paste. If you are not comfortable free handing the shapes, find an image of the nail polish bottles in a magazine and use it as a template to cut out the 2-D shape. Apply frosting to the back of the shapes and place the cutout shapes on the sides of the three-tiered cake.

Cupcakes

As an alternative, use ideas from any of the large cakes and turn them into cupcakes. After frosting the cupcakes with the colored frosting of your choice, place gum paste cutouts of nail polish bottles, bobby pins, or a brush or comb on top of each cupcake. For another option, look for small plastic versions of cosmetology tools at your local party supply store. Place these toys on top of the cupcakes as decorations.
