How Do I Make a Kotatsu Futon?

How Do I Make a Kotatsu Futon?

In Japan, central heating is extremely rare, so kotatsu futons are extremely popular. They are shorter coffee tables with a special heater underneath and a thick comforter on top to create a cozy, warm sitting area. They keep the lower half of your body warm while eating, reading or watching TV. They're great for any home, but ideal for saving space in smaller apartments or houses. They're also a cheaper alternative to turning up the thermostat. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Find a suitable table to build your kotatsu. A Lack table works best and can be found at IKEA. Regular coffee tables from thrift stores or a garage sale will also work as long as they have wooden tops.

    2

Turn the table upside down so the legs are facing the ceiling. Saw the legs so that they are about 1 1/2 to 2 feet long. Sand the new cut table feet so that they are smooth. Leave the table upside down for the next step.

    3

Purchase a kotatsu heater. They are compact, low-volt heaters made for extremely small spaces. Find them for a reasonable price at the website Be Nippon. Use the screws provided in the package to secure the heater to the bottom-center of the table. Screw in each screw loosely until they are all in. Tighten the screws, ensure the heater is secure, then turn the table right-side up.

    4

Use wood staples to secure any wires to the bottom of the table, going down toward one table leg. Do not pierce the wire with the wood staple it should fit snugly over the wire, not in it. Turn the table over and position the leg with wires closest to the outlet plug where you will plug the heater in.

    5

Grab the largest comforter you have -- king size is best -- and place it over the table. Set four to six pillows on the floor around the table. Plug the heater into an outlet and wait for the space to heat up. Then scoot your bottom half under, read a book and enjoy.
