How to Build a Sewing Table That Can Be Stored Easily

Sewing tables are a must-have for any serious sewer. Having a large, sturdy surface upon which to work, allows you to spread out your cloth for cutting and pinning, lay out paper to make patterns, and more. If the cost of a specialized sewing table gives you sticker shock, take heart. You can create a sewing table that can be stored easily with items you may already have--and no tools or lumber required.

Instructions

    1

Buy a folding table. These can be made of a wood-like material or plastic with sturdy metal legs, and are available at office and building supply stores, or other big-box stores. The lengths range from 4 to 6 feet. Chose the length that best suits your needs. You might even be able to find one at a rummage or lawn sale.

    2

Buy four 6-inch tall bed risers. These are also available at the same stores as the folding tables. The height will raise the folding table to a height that will not stress your back as you bend over your work. Place the table's legs on the bed risers.

    3

Cut open paper bags and tape them together until you have enough paper to cover the top of the folding table. A roll of brown packaging paper would also work. Make sure the paper cover is large enough to extend over the edges by 4 inches or more. Secure the paper to the table by taping it. Try not to extend the tape up over the working top. The brown paper can be a useful tool as you can pin patterns or fabric to the paper, securing the pieces as you work.

    4

Fold your table away when your project is complete. You can fold your table away complete with paper when you are done, or remove it for a fresh start with your next project. Store the risers in a bag that you keep with the table.
