How to Make a Slipcover for a Square Ottoman

How to Make a Slipcover for a Square Ottoman

Ottomans can serve multiple functions in your living room, working as a footrest, extra seating and even as a coffee table. Because they are so useful, however, they can quickly become worn down. A slipcover is a quick and simple way to update out-of-date or battered furniture in an affordable manner. You can make a slipcover for your square ottoman in just a few hours and give it an updated, fresh look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure the width and height of the top and each side of your square ottoman. For a true square, these measurements should be the same. If they are not, however, write down each measurement. Add one inch to each of your measurements for seam allowances.

    2

Launder your fabric and dry as directed by the manufacturer. Iron it flat and remove all wrinkles. Lay the fabric out on a flat surface.

    3

Cut out your pieces. Cut one piece for each side and the top according to your measurements. Use a fabric pencil to mark the back side of each piece so you know which piece it is. For example, mark "top" on the top piece.

    4

Place the top edge of the front side piece and the front edge of the top piece right sides together and pin in place. Sew the pinned area together with a straight seam. Use a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins.

    5

Place the top edge of the back side piece and the back edge of the top piece right sides together and pin into place. Sew both pieces together along the pinned edge with a straight seam. Use a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Remove your pins.

    6

Iron both of the seams you sewed open so they lay flat.

    7

Lay the piece you sewed together flat with the wrong side up. It will be a large rectangle. Pin the top edge of one of the side pieces to the right edge of the top piece. Sew with a straight seam and a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the opposite side.

    8

Match up the side edges of this side piece to the side edges of the long rectangle and pin together. Sew each side with a straight seam and 3/8-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the opposite side.

    9

Fold the entire bottom edge up -inch all the way around. Iron the folded edge into place and repeat so you have two folds. Sew the entire lower edges with a 1/8-inch seam allowance and a straight seam.

    10

Turn your slipcover right-side out and place over your ottoman.
