How to Add a Table Area to a Living Room

How to Add a Table Area to a Living Room

A cocktail table is typically found in a living room. However, there are many styles of tables that will work in the room, both functionally and decoratively. Tables can be used to separate spaces, to display personal treasures, and for various activities. The key is to select a table that will serve your needs while adding to the overall look of the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Add a rectangular Parsons table or a round pedestal table. Use a rectangular table against the back of the sofa. Use a circular pedestal table at the entrance to the room if there is enough floor space to create a foyer effect. The rectangular table can hold a lamp, stack of books, and a sculpture. Use a large vase of flowers on a circular table

along with collected items such as shells and stones from beach vacations.

    2

Bring in a table to create a small dining area in a large and spacious living room, or an apartment that does not have a separate dining room. Use a table that will not overwhelm the space. Use a bistro table to serve dinner for two, or a full-size dining table in a larger living room. Dress up a plain table or garage sale find by using a tablecloth. Keep place settings on the table with your favorite china or dinnerware.

    3

Create an at-home work area by adding a table to serve as a desk in the living room. Use this idea for a small, one-bedroom apartment, or an open loft space. Select a table that will complement the furnishings in the living room if you plan to keep the table visible. Place the table where you can easily access electrical outlets to plug in your computer and other electronic devices. Hide the table when you have guests by installing drapes on a rod that can close off your work table.

    4

Give the living room more seating space by adding one or two matching ottoman cocktail tables. Place the ottomans in front of the sofa to serve cocktails and snacks, or to display a collection of art books. Stage the ottoman tables against a wall to use for additional seating when entertaining. Choose ottomans that open to provide storage if you need to contain items.

    5

Use an antique buffet table to store linens, dinnerware, and even your music collection. Place the table against a wall in the living room. Use the top of the buffet to create a bar that will show off your collection of glasses and stemware.
