Design Ideas for a Kids Art Room

Introducing your children to art will enrich their lives and stimulate their creativity. An art space or art room for your children will give them a special place to immerse themselves in their own imaginative world. Let your own creativity loose as you personalize your child's art room and make it safe, inviting and fun. Does this Spark an idea?

Artistic Walls

Make your kids' art room a place of discovery and artistic play. Start by giving the room a fresh coat of paint. Use bright colors, but don't cover all four walls with neon - you don't want to overstimulate your child. Paint one wall a bold color, like royal blue, and leave the others a plain palette of white or eggshell. Then bring the bold color onto the lighter walls by painting bright polka dots or other shapes on them. This will integrate bright colors without overwhelming your little artists. Try interesting, simple designs like circles, geometric or organic patterns, or nature silhouettes.

Encourage your kids to make their own designs by creating a durable wall blackboard. With painter's tape, mark off a large rectangle or square shape on one of the walls. It should be low enough that your kid can reach it easily. Brush the space with a thin layer of blackboard paint, let it dry, and then apply another coat. Remove the painter's tape after the paint dries. When you are ready to decorate, be sure and include a small stand with chalks and erasers to place by the blackboard.

Inspiring Floors

Children find inspiration for art just about anywhere, so choose flooring that isn't just functional. Stay away from wooden floors, which might have a hard time standing up to paints and markers. Use decorative carpet tiles instead. You can make colorful patterns out of varying shades of a single color or make the flooring a rainbow of different colors. Purchase carpet tile that is stain-resistant, and remove stained carpet by replacing a single tile rather than a whole room of carpet. Add kid-friendly area rugs in different sizes to bring brightness and warmth to the room. Stimulate your child's artistic flair by using carpets and rugs in varying textures, like shag and short pile.

Artistic Extras

Place a large table in the center of your child's art room. This will be the focal point and main area of play. The table should be sturdy with no sharp edges. It needs to be at kid height too - you don't want little climbers to take a fall off a high table. Include several chairs so that your children and their friends can create together. In one corner of the room add low cubicles for art supply storage. If your room has a window, add a window box, where your child can unwind and enjoy artistic inspiration from nature.
