How to Build a Table Over a Washer & Dryer

A laundry table that fits over your washer and dryer can give you a flat surface for folding clothes or additional storage. A few specific tools, such as a table saw and pneumatic nail gun, will make the project easy and fast. When choosing how deep you want your table, remember to take the width of your door opening into account. If you want your table deeper than the width of your door, you will need to assemble and paint the table in your laundry room. Does this Spark an idea?

Measure and write down the vertical height of your washer and dryer, add 2 and 1/4 inches to this measurement to account for the 2-inch wide front and sidepieces. This will be the measurement that you use when cutting the legs for your table.

Measure and write down the depth of your washer and dryer. The depth of your appliance is the measurement from the front of your washer/dryer to the back of your washer/dryer. Subtract 2 inches from this measurement to account for the 1-inch thick pine board that will be your front and back piece.

Measure and write down the width of your washer and dryer while they are sitting side by side. You will measure from the outside left edge of the washer to the outside right edge of the dryer. Add 4 inches to this measurement to account for the 2-inch wide legs of the table.

Cut your plywood to the depth and width measurements that you wrote down. This will be the top of your table.

Add 2 inches to the width that you cut your tabletop to, then cut two pieces, 1-inch-by-2-inch, to this measurement for the front and back. The additional 2 inches are to account for the 1-inch thickness of the sidepieces that will fit in between the front and back piece of 1-inch-by-2-inch pine.

Cut two pieces, 1-inch-by-2 inch, to your depth measurement for the sides.

Apply wood glue to the short left and right sides of the plywood tabletop. Nail the 1-inch-by-2-inch sidepieces to both short sides of the tabletop. It is easiest to assemble this upside down with the plywood tabletop face down on the floor to give you a flat surface to work on.

Apply wood glue to the long front and back edges of your plywood tabletop and to the ends of the left and right sidepieces that you just attached. Nail the 1-inch-by-2-inch front and back pieces to the plywood tabletop and pine sidepieces. Clamp the front and back pine pieces to the left and right sidepieces and allow glue to dry. You have now attached the skirt of the rectangle tabletop for your laundry table.

Cut four stakes, 2-inch-by-2-inch, to the vertical height measurement noted in the first step. Apply wood glue to each inside corner of the upside table. Put each leg into place so that the corner of the stake sits on the inside corner of your table. Nail the legs into place from the outside of the table. Allow glue to dry.

Flip your table over and fill any nail holes with wood putty. Allow the putty to dry and sand to a smooth finish. Sand the entire table with an orbital sander.

Clean the sawdust off the table with a hand broom and damp rag.

Use a roller to apply two coats of paint to the table. Allow each coat to dry completely.

Apply a polyurethane sealant with a foam brush. Allow to dry.

Move the table into your laundry area.
