How to Decorate With Chairs and a Coffee Table

Make your living area more user-friendly by decorating with chairs and a coffee table. This will provide you with extra seating and a place to put drinks, edibles and games when entertaining or gathering the family together. Chairs and coffee tables are available in a wide variety of styles, colors and materials. Choose them with care to coordinate with your decor scheme. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Choose a coffee table that fits your chosen design style. If you have a mid-century modern living room, look for a table with simple, sleek lines and a visual lightness. An organic and geometric-shaped coffee table works well. Tables with inlaid designs such as tile or mirrors add an extra design element.

    2

Purchase chairs that are functional and attractive to you. Even small accent chairs need to be comfortable and sturdy, especially if you're using them in the main living area. Look for chairs that curve to the body or provide comfortable back and seating support.

    3

Create contrast with colors and texture. Add a bold red coffee table in a room with yellow and white or refurbish a pair of Victorian chairs with moss green paint on the wood and dark blue patterned upholstery in a lush fabric.

    4

Accent your coffee table with decorative items and books. Add a small house plant or collection of tiny succulents on the coffee table for a natural touch. Fresh-cut flowers in a vase also work well. Display a large picture book that goes with your design and decor theme or that you find entertaining.

    5

Accent your chairs with decorative cushions or accent pillows. Place only one or two small pillows per chair, making sure that your guests can still sit comfortably. Use a vintage pillow to give a modern chair contrast, go with a bold contemporary pattern or a simple pillow with an image or text on it, depending on the chair design and surrounding decor.

    6

Place your chairs and coffee table in an arrangement that allows guests to see one another while sitting. Group pieces into a nook rather than placing them flat against walls. Keep a pathway open between the table, chairs and any sofas or additional seating. Experiment with placing the chairs at diagonals across from the table or side by side
opposite a sofa with the table in the center.
