How to Decorate a Table With Risers

How to Decorate a Table With Risers

Arranging risers on a table presents a multi-dimensional display. Using techniques that caterers employ to give a buffet table an inviting and professional appearance gives panache to even a low-budget or casual event. Learning methods for dressing the table with tablecloths, grouping the risers and placing decorations results in a harmonious and uncrowded effect. Whether you're decorating a table for a wedding, holiday, party or picnic, basic tips on using risers will help you set up and decorate the table. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Cover the table with a table skirt and tablecloth or a tablecloth by itself, depending on the effect you want. A table skirt or floor-length tablecloth gives a finished appearance for a formal event such as a wedding or anniversary party.

    2

Arrange the risers on the table with the tallest ones near the center. Keep the risers at least 6 inches from the edges of the table, unless the table stands against a wall. This reduces the risk of a guest knocking off a raised tray. Space the risers so there's enough room between them to allow for the trays or platters to rest on them without crowding.

    3

Cover the table risers with a tablecloth. Use a different-colored tablecloth if desired. For example, create a contrast with the cloth that's covering the table, such as a red cloth over a white cloth. Decorate the table in the colors of the party or event, using the bride's colors for a wedding, school colors for a graduation or sports event, or theme colors for a holiday or other party.

    4

Gently bunch the tablecloth around the risers to create soft folds. Pull the edges of the tablecloth to make it hang evenly over the edges, or fold the cloth under at each edge of the table for a soft effect.

    5

Center the centerpiece such as a bowl of flowers, ice sculpture, gingerbread house or other decoration on the center riser. Alternatively, center the main feature of the table, such as a wedding cake, turkey or other special dish on the center rise. Display a bowl of flowers or other decorative item on on each side of it. Narrow vases fit well between risers so you can reserve the risers for food to avoid crowding the table.

    6

Add other dishes to the remaining risers to create a functional and appealing display. For example, if there will be a buffet line, arrange salads and finger foods at the beginning of the table, main dishes in the middle and side dishes at the end.
