How to Make a Tabletop From Granite Remnants

How to Make a Tabletop From Granite Remnants

Granite remnants are smaller slabs of material left over after a large piece, such as a counter top, is cut. Using a granite slab as a tabletop is a cost-effective way of adding class and elegance to any room. Cutting and finishing granite takes special tools, so take your dimensions to a granite fabricator and let him or her cut, polish and bevel the edges for you. The base must be able to support the weight of the slab, so it's best to build one out of quality lumber or metal. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure the slab and cut pieces of the wood to size for a base, allowing the granite to overhang by 2 inches on each side.

    2

Fit the pieces together to form a rectangle and affix with wood screws. Add one more piece down the center, length-wise to help support the weight of the slab. Pre-drill the screw holes and countersink the screws.

    3

Add braces in each corner and fasten with wood screws. This will add more strength to the base.

    4

Chisel one side of each leg about 3/8-inch deep and as long as the base wood. Set the chiseled side to the outside of each corner of the base and use this smooth surface to affix the legs to the base with wood screws. Countersink the screws.

    5

Turn the base upright and screw one more screw in each corner from the top down. This helps hold the legs in place.

    6

Fill the screw holes with wood putty and stain or paint the wood base.

    7

Dry-fit the granite on top of the base first and center the piece. Mark the location of the base edges on the underside of the slab.

    8

Apply a heavy bead of carpenter's adhesive on the top of the base, including the braces and the center support beam. Carefully set the granite on top of the base and check to make certain it is centered. Let dry for 24 to 48 hours before using.
