How to Apply an Epoxy Top Surface to a Table or Bar Top

The proper application of epoxy creates a durable top for a table or bar. Epoxy is essentially an adhesive. Its uses range from replacing nails to mending concrete slabs. The substance is clear and has significant protective properties. One variety of epoxy puts these properties to use on wood. A coating of the substance prevents scarring, scratching and staining of wood-top furniture including tables and bars. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Move the table or bar out of sunlight. If this is not possible, cover surrounding windows with a tarp or other light-blocking items.

    2

Place the table or bar on a tarp. Epoxy will stick to and typically ruin floors. Cover the area to prevent damage.

    3

Create a barrier around the edge of the table using duct tape. Go around the bottom edge of the bar or table leaving a small lip of tape sticking out the sides. This will prevent some dripping of the epoxy.

    4

Poke a hole in a medium-size bucket with an ice pick. This hole will be the vehicle for the pouring of the epoxy. Cover the hole securely with a strip of duct tape.

    5

Mix clear epoxy resin according to the manufacturer's directions in the prepared bucket. Carefully measure the mix and catalyst exactly as directed. Use a measuring cup for accuracy.

    6

Stir the mixture thoroughly by hand using a metal stir stick. Stir until no bubbles are apparent in the mix.

    7

Pull the duct tape off the hole of the bucket and slowly pour the epoxy onto the tabletop or bar. Move the bucket over the table allowing the mixture to spread evenly over the area. Pour a thin layer first and allow it to sit for two to four hours. Pour a second thicker layer.

    8

Allow the epoxy to harden. While it will appear to be dry within several hours, it will take 48 to 72 hours to cure completely.
