Interior Design Ideas for Billiards

Interior Design Ideas for Billiards

The classic game of billiards, derived from croquet played in 17th century France, is also commonly called "snooker," a moniker given by the British. The names and varieties of play vary around the world. Create a room that honors the Old World class of the game by creating a rich and comfortable space. Remember that details are not purely decorative, but often integral to the game. In the end, you should not only walk into a different room, but a different world. Does this Spark an idea?

Table

Choose a table with stylish dark wood. Don't feel bound to the green felt; deep red, blue and tan also work. Center the table so that it's not only the main event, but also so that the players have sufficient room in which to move and shoot. Remember that billiards tables are larger than pool tables, so ample space is important. Keep furnishings clear of the table. Billiards racks may be wall-mounted nearby.

Lighting

There must be good lighting above the table, particularly as snooker, in addition to using a larger table, uses smaller pockets. Precision is important, and players count on having overhead lights. Typically, three or four pendant lamps hang over the table. As for the rest of the room, it's fine to keep things a bit dimmer so your company can relax after their turn.

Decor

Dark wood shouldn't be reserved just for the table. Create a bar area or lounge in dark woods. A mahogany bar with soft lighting and glass shades melds well with the mood of the game. Some billiards rooms make use of wood trim in either the wainscoting or crown molding. Leather seats add to the ambiance. Near the snooker table, but set far enough back so that the audience doesn't interfere with the game, go with bar stools with backs so guests can follow the action comfortably. If you have a bar or lounge area, leather club chairs are an excellent addition. Burgundy, cognac and mahogany chairs are preferred, and cream walls make for a nice contrast. Fabrics absorb sound, so if the floor is not carpeted, area rugs will help. Keep the room cool and well-ventilated, especially if you allow smoking.

The room should make you feel at home, so if neutrals are more your style, go with beige felt and lighter (pecan or white) leather. White and gray granite makes for an elegant bar. This color palette moves the atmosphere from Old World to sleek and contemporary.
