How to Make an Art Room

If one or more of your family members is artistic, creating an art room in your home may be more of a necessity than a luxury. Luckily, even a small space can be converted to an artist's studio or craft room with relative ease if you're willing to invest a couple of hours for organization and a few dollars for supplies.

Garages, spare bedrooms, and basements all convert well into art rooms. Some basements and garages also offer the benefit of running water, which can be helpful to artists using a variety of media. Does this Spark an idea?

Remove any carpeting that may be in the room because it is likely to get damaged by paint, paint thinner, or other crafting liquids. A linoleum, tile, wooden, or concrete floor is much easier to clean. Keep drop cloths on hand to protect floors during particularly messy projects.

Set up your easel and drafting table in the areas with the best lighting. One could be placed near a window and the other close to a good lamp.

Use a single chair for both the easel and drafting table to minimize space consumption in the room.

Build shelves in the room as a storage system for your art supplies.

Hang peg boards to provide a storage area for finished art pieces as well as a drying space for wet paintings.
